ReSew2020 - #13 Skirt and Top

It has been a long time since I completed a ReSew project. To find out what the ReSew2020 Project is all about have a look at this page - https://www.simpleslowstill.com.au/resew2020.html. I know it is no longer 2020 but I am going to keep that name in honour of the year that was.

I really loved this dress when I bought it from the second hand shop but it was just a bit too short. I was going to just make a top out of it and use the lovely frills for something else. But then my daughter suggested I make it into a skirt to make the most of the frills. Then I thought I could use the top part of the dress, extend it and turn that into a shirt. Two for the price of one!

With the skirt I was able to let some darts out to give me some more width.  Then I simply attached some bias binding around the top of the skirt and threaded some elastic through.  It doesn't look spectacular and I will always wear a shirt over the top but it works.

It took me ages to decide what to do with the top.  With gathered dresses and tops back in fashion I thought I would give that a go. It looked ridiculous! I looked like a clown in the circus.  Also wasn't sure what colours to use.  I didn't want to just use blue so I thought I would do the strips of varying widths.

I love the skirt and have worn it several times.  A number of people commented how much they liked it when I wore it.  I am not sold on the top yet. I think it works.  I may just have to give it some time to get used to it.

Imagine living each day with a sense of awe and wonder. Imagine waking up, being excited and ready to be surprised by the many gifts God has prepared for you. Imagine God saying to you each morning "I have a gift for you and can't wait for you to see it!" Imagine!                                                                       (Henri Nouwen)

As I went for my walks this week, intentionally looking for little surprises to photograph, I was amazed at what I saw. So many special, often simple things that caught my eye. Things that I would normally have not paid any attention to but this week gave me joy. I have to admit I did take more than one photo a day. Too many wonderful things to enjoy.

Today I am thankful to God for: a scavenger hunt in the bush with friends, views out over the Downs, sunlight spider webs, spikey red cactus fruit, baby Tommy coming home from hospital, wet weather gear on the bike, dodging showers on our ride to the Bunyas, exploring the Queens Park playground, tea and cake.

5 Things i love about my sewing room

I am super excited to have my very own sewing room.  In the past I was fortunate to have a sewing cabinet in one room, a table to cut out fabric in another and my ironing board in still another room.  Now I have them all together, in one room!!

Here are five things I love about my sewing room.

1. Everything is old, recycled or second hand

Everything that is in the sewing room I have either bought second hand, upcycled, recycled or have had for a very long time.

I have had my sewing machine for over 25 years.  It is a basic Brother machine.  No fancy computer options. As long as it does straight stitch, zigzag and button holes, I am happy.

The table we have had for 30 years. The sewing cabinet was bought second hand about ten years ago.  Even the mirror on the wall was a found treasure.

2. Sewing table

I love how the table is away from the wall so I can walk all the way around it when I am trying to cut out a pattern and material for a project.

3. boxes with labels

Picture
I love how I have everything sorted in boxes which I have sourced from different places.  Photocopy boxes from school are a great size box to use. But I especially love that I have put labels on them so I know what is in each box!

4. Drawer for Cotton

Picture
I love this drawer in the sewing table which orginally would have been a cutlery drawer but it is just perfect for cotton reels.  In the past my reels were all piled together in a container.  I had no idea what was at the bottom and every time I tried to have a look they would start to unravel.  There would be a birds nest of loose threads!  Can anyone relate? That is why I am super excited about being able to see my threads and get to them easily.

5. full length Mirror

I love having a full length mirror in the sewing room.  Makes it so easy to check what things look like as I am sewing.

Thankful thursday

Thankful Thursday: As we enter into this Lenten season, a period of 40 days before Easter starting yesterday with Ash Wednesday, it is traditionally a time of reflection and preparation as we follow the course of Jesus' journey to the cross.

I always enjoy my early morning walk. It is part of my morning routine. It helps me to get ready for the day but it is also a time to spend with God, just noticing little gifts he has for me. Usually I go the same way but sometimes I enjoy going a different path. This lent, as I walk, I am going to take a series of 40 photos to help me focus, pay attention and reflect on the gifts that God has for me in that moment.

Today I am thankful to God for: words of inspiration, sharing stories, invitations for collaboration, picking beans and eating them fresh, a video of a gorgeous baby opening his eyes, photo updates, playing chasey, lychees and homegrown eggplant shared.
