Fabric Twine and T-Shirt Yarn Workshop

Picture

T-shirt yarn is made from old t-shirts and is perfect for chunky knitting, crochet, weaving and macrame.  It is a great way to recycle old t-shirts and saves them from ending up in landfill. After making a ball of continuous yarn we will turn some of that yarn into an infinity scarf requiring no sewing at all.

I will also teach you how to make Fabric Yarn.  Making this yarn is quite addictive; once you get started you just want to see how big you can make your ball of twine! It is quite meditative, a great way to slow down and once again save all those scraps of fabric going to landfill.  I will also give you some great tips and hints on how to use your twine.

You will need:
  • An old t-shirt - basic knit t-shirt not a synthetic sports-type t-shirt.  It doesn't matter if it has a picture on it.
  • Strips of cloth approx 2cm wide, length can vary
  • Scissors

Rag Rug Workshop

Picture
Rag rugs are sometimes called toothbrush rugs. They are so much fun to make and are a great way to recycle old sheets and doonas. No sewing is involved. You can opt to leave your "rug" the size of a dinner plate which can make a fabulous hot pot stand or you can continue to make a full size rug in your own time.

In this workshop you will learn how to:
  • Join strips of fabric together
  • Use a modified blanket stitch

You will need:
  • Strips of fabric, approx 3cm wide.  Strips can be torn or cut
  • To make a hot pot stand you will only need a couple of metres of fabric torn into strips.  To make a rug you will need about 8m or two single sheets worth. On the day you may just like to bring a selection of the different fabrics you want to use. You can always cut more later
  • Elastic threader (tip: not the tweezer type), safety pin (doesn't have to be a big one or paper clip.
